Michaela Swartz

  • Elsie Civic Engagement Intern

Michaela Swartz is a senior at the University of Pittsburgh pursuing a degree in Political Science with minors in Economics and Law, Criminal Justice, and Society, as well as a certificate in Public and Professional Writing.

As her studies have progressed, she has developed a strong interest in public service, constituent engagement, and policymaking that directly impacts local communities. During the spring 2026 semester, she interned with Representative Emily Kinkead through the Elsie Hillman Institute of Politics internship and seminar program. In this role, Michaela assisted with constituent communication and casework while researching issues affecting communities across the Pittsburgh area.

At Pitt, she is actively involved in campus leadership and civic engagement initiatives. Michaela currently serves as President of Bridge Pittsburgh, a nonpartisan political discussion organization dedicated to encouraging productive dialogue among students with differing political perspectives. This experience has strengthened my ability to facilitate respectful and thoughtful conversations across ideological differences, something I believe is especially important in today’s political climate. She is also the Social Chair of the undergraduate chapter of Women in Law, where she contributes to event planning, outreach, and organizational initiatives.

Beyond academics and student organizations, her previous experience in hospitality and customer service improved her communication skills, adaptability, and ability to work under pressure. These experiences taught Michaela the importance of professionalism, collaboration, and empathy when working with people from different backgrounds. In her free time, she enjoys cooking, baking, going to the beach, and reading!

In the future, Michaela wishes to attend law school and pursue a career in international law with a focus on Eastern European politics. Throughout the remainder of her college career, she hopes to continue building on her experience in public service, civic engagement, and advocacy through the Elsie Hillman Civic Engagement Internship. She is looking forward to getting started with this opportunity!
